The United States is facing a nation-wide obesity epidemic. Children are among those at risk. The experts cannot agree on all of the factors that are contributing to this epidemic, but thing they all agree on is that many of today's children do not spend enough time outside playing. The advent of video game consoles, computers and television has led children away from enjoying their backyards. A surefire way to help get kids excited about going outside is to purchase the right type of backyard equipment. When it comes to good times outside, you simply can't beat a good old-fashioned trampoline.
Trampolines are relatively inexpensive, unless you decide to go with a high-end model. Most of the recreational trampolines that are purchased come from retailers and big box stores. These units are usually round and sit about four feet off the ground. Given that these are recreational models, the bed of the trampoline (the place where you jump) is a usually made of a generic interwoven material that aids in providing the bounce. The other part of the bounce equation is provided by the springs that connect around the outside of the trampoline bed and secure it to the metal frame. For most backyard trampoline enthusiasts, the unit will be just fine right out of the box. However, if you decide you need more bounce, you can always replace the bed with a bed type that is more reactive to the motions of the user. Or, you can consider replacing the stock springs with specialized springs that will give you more bounce. Regardless of whether you use the trampoline straight out of the box or with modifications, you can be sure it will provide hours of fun.
While a backyard trampoline is a ton of fun, you need to be aware of some of the safety considerations that come along with it. Given that these units typically sit at least four feet above ground level, there is always a possibility of serious injury if someone is ejected off of the trampoline. This type of accident can be prevented by purchasing a safety net that encloses the entire trampoline, creating a type of cage. This cage effectively keeps jumpers on the trampoline and off of the ground.
When you are looking for backyard recreational toys, there are many options. The trampoline is a classic backyard apparatus and you can't go wrong with it.
